Promise {poetry}

This world lays so still
between this life and death,
caught between what seems so real
and what we've been promised
it will be.

We will be alright
when all the dust has settled,
when all our blood has spilled,
and the tears mix with the soil.
Still, we will be alright.

Our names have been engraved
on the very palm
of Someone else's hand,
and Someone's made a promise
that will be kept,
even if we go it alone
and every piece of our heart
is lost in the dirt and dust.

There is a promise
still standing
somewhere we can't ruin it
with our filthy hands.
A promise that weighs more
than our own soul
and the lying monologue
circling inside our mind,
circling in close for the kill.

The world seems
to hold its breath
to see which part of me
will make it out alive
from this silent war,
from this fight
between life and death,
and how my soul is crushed,
and Your promise lingers on.

We will be alright,
even if I choose to drown.
We will be alright,
even if hope and purpose can't be found.
We will be alright
because we will not be forgotten
by the One with scarred hands.

Paint Your Soul {poetry}

I'll paint your soul with colors,
the brightest I can find,
with sunsets and mountain meadows
and afternoon sunshine.

I'll paint you the color of adventures,
of your hand in mine,
so in these winter months
you'll remember another time,
and even if you can't,
I'll remember it all for you.

I'll etch into your heart
my words of honest hope.
I don't know about tomorrow,
but I know as long as I have breath,
I'll face the dark with you,
just as I danced in the sunshine,
your hand always in mine.

I'll paint your soul with colors
when it grows too dim to be seen.
I'll sing you back your song
when your heart has lost its tune.
I'll add my favorite parts
--your laugh, your smile,
those long car rides
on deserted roads
in the early morning light,
and mostly, your hand in mine --
Those were all my favorite parts
because you reminded me what it means to be alive,
and now it's my turn
to decorate your world with brighter hues
and memories of perfect moments.

I'll paint this darkness with colors
Till it's so bright
your soul can't help but be light.
Your heart can't help but laugh
at the colors I've painted the soul-suffocating night.

Smoke Signals {poetry}

I'll send you a smoke signal
just so you'll know I'm alright.
It won't be much
or nearly quite enough -- I'll admit it--
and you might even miss it,
but it's all I have the strength to do.
Sometimes...right now I ponder:
what's the point?
Do you even care?
But I remember what you've said
before it turns to ash,
and so that smoke signal comes
or is coming
as soon as I set this fire
or learn how to rearrange my words.

I'm trying to rearrange my words,
but written down,
they lack all meaning.
They're hollow. Too much. Too little.
Do you have the grace to see
right through my confusion?
Maybe you can just read
between the lines?
Or will this smoke signal suffice?
Will it mold itself into an S.O.S?

Don't bother.
It's just enough to let you know
I'm alright,
and I promise
I'll come back.
I won't know the date.
I don't know when
I'll be happy again,
but you'll be the first to know.
Till then, look to the sky.
I promise I'll let you know I'm still alive.

Hey there, I didn't intend to take a week off from blogging, but you know life. I actually persuaded my mom to write a guest post, but she hasn't finished it (she's a little bit out of practice with writing. Still -- I'm excited to share the post with you sometime this month). I've been spending more time and energy on writing stories again, and I've also been rereading some of my old favorite books. I haven't ever really been much of a rereader, but this year I decided to start. So far I've read The Magician's Nephew; The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe; The Gammage Cup and The Whisper of Glocken by Carol Kendall (I dearly love these two books, especially the second one. The characters are endearing, and I even chuckled a few times which is a rarity). Currently I'm working on The Horse and His Boy and Anne of Green Gables, too. I feel like I'm visiting old friends. It's so delightful. What are some favorite books from when you were younger that you'd consider your 'old friends'?

The Story of Hope {poetry}

Tell me the story of hope
and dreams
and tomorrows
that start with the bright sunrise.

Tell me the story of hope
and love
and feeling together,
even when our hearts are so far apart.

Tell me the story of hope
and mercy
and the courage
to face every day with a smile.

Tell me the story of hope
and the wait
in between
with the ache of expectation.

Mostly just tell me of hope
and its reason,
and patience produces
something far beyond imagination.

Just keep telling me of hope
till it's as natural as breathing,
and let my heart hope,
Even when smothered underneath
this constant sorrow
and this long winter
because hope knows spring comes.

Hope knows.

I hope all of you are doing well! There's a lot going on here. Lots of Christmas preparations (Can you believe Christmas is in only two weeks?!) and getting ready for some family to come. It feels busy, and I'm just trying to stay on top of the waves (hence the reason the blog was quiet for two weeks. Good grief, I never seem to be able to keep to good schedules/systems/habits). How's your Christmas celebrations coming? Are you finished with your shopping? I am, mostly. Thanks to Amazon. I have my whole bedroom, but somehow all my gifts end up on the end of my bed?? What's your favorite Christmas traditions?

Soul-Filling Silence

Let's go find a lake
Somewhere they won't find us,
Somewhere the noise
Inside my head
Quiets or goes away.
Let's just sit here for awhile
As I remember
What it is to...be,
And please remind me
Who I am without the moving --
The constant, restless moving
And the doing.
It's something
I always seem to forget.
Maybe if you remember,
Some of the voices in my head
Will learn to just be quiet.
I'll know what stillness is
Apart from this running away
Into the hills to finally breathe.
Can we be quiet by these waters
And fill our lungs with air,
Sitting shoulder to shoulder
In this place, this connection,
Free from despair?
I'll look at you and smile.
You'll just smile back.
We won't need words here
In this soul-filling silence
Because I know I'm safe with you.
I am always safe with you,
And you'll remind me
I'll be alright.

I tried entering a poetry contest. I didn't place, but it's alright because if my poetry can somehow slip into the cracks in my heart and maybe resound in one or two other people's lives, then I'm content. Where are your happy places? Where do you go to escape your brain and life?

Maybe We'll Be Friends

Maybe we'll be friends
When we grow up
And fit inside another pair of shoes
And live another life,
Or maybe we'll only be neighbors
Who vaguely recall names
And the knowledge
We knew each other before.

We'll share similar scars
But only go skin deep.
We'll talk about the weather,
Our cars
The jobs we keep.

What about family?
No, we don't talk about our families.
They're the reason for our scars,
For our shallow, earthly conversations
With these people who share our lives.

Maybe we'll friends
When we grow up
And set out on our own
And cross a thousand deserts,
Only to return
To this familiar place
And make it our home.

Or maybe we could be lovers
Or friends who loved enough
To change the surface of our lives.

The thorns turn into roses.
The house needs new paint.
I think my wound started to bleed
As soon as you said hello.

Maybe we'll be friends
When we both grow up,
Or maybe only friends right now
When something happened to align.

Can we be friends for life?
I don't know half of what that means,
But it seems a lovely thing.

Maybe we'll be friends
When we both grow up
And fit inside another pair of shoes
And live another life.

In Crushing Blows

Hope comes in crushing blows
And smiles that never last.
Life likes to prove it so
With love that never lasts.
People say they will
And make promises
They won't even try to keep,
And we'll just let them go.
They're human --
What else do you expect?

If I could put a band aid on every broken hope--
But no, we haven't time or space
To travel down that road.
It's just enough to know
That hope hurts
Much like despair.
Sometimes I wonder what's the point
Of one and not the other.

Hope is something
I cannot bear.
It bursts at every seam
Like sorrow
And cannot be pinned down,
Contained with perfect words.
What is one
Without the other?
Sorrow and hope.
For every light burned out
And every dream pulled down,
One holds the other's hand.
We mourn as much
For hope as for the thing that dies,
And all our sorrows double.

Hope comes in crushing blows
And laughter on the summits,
Somewhere just out of reach.
Hope walks hand in hand
With love that never lasts
And promises left out to dry
And aching battles repeated
Till something else gives up and dies,
Unable to capture hope
Within these flaw-filled hands.

Hope postponed creates despair,
But hope fulfilled
Pulls the band aids off my heart
And multiplies my joy.

Again, not the post I was planning for this week, but life happened, and I'm trying to give myself breathing room when things don't work out and time doesn't behave.

Do any of you write poetry/prose? I'd love to see it if you're up for sharing!

The Letter in the Tree

You must have watched me climb that tree at least a thousand times. You must have watched from some hiding place beyond the garden wall, and in retrospect, it should make me die of embarrassment and self-consciousness -- the idea you watched me the first few times when I climbed it as if I was climbing a cliff's side and those sturdy branches were like rocks that might shift and let me fall. And you heard me sing as I climbed it with ease to sit upon my branch and gaze out at the world and the sunsets and the snowfalls and the first rain of autumn. You watched me climb it methodically as my shoulders shook from the tears I couldn't smother underneath the surface. And you had seen those tears.

But your words, the letter -- I felt as though you were as familiar to me as the tree or the tree was as familiar to you as it is to me. You must have climbed it once to tuck the letter where I would find it, but did you climb it more? Was your branch the same as mine? I wouldn't mind if it is. Just don't forget it's my tree.

How'd you know I'd show up before the wind blew the paper and the words away? Or the rain came and made your words swim? Did you wait to see me coming before you scaled over the wall and left me the gift of your letter? The imprint of your kindness into the corner of my lonely world? Why'd you leave it for me?

Were my thoughts really so loud as I swung my legs back and forth below my branch? Did you just watch me in those shared moments? How many hours were we together when I was unaware of you? Why didn't you ever let me know you were there?

We must have sat in companionable silence a hundred times or more, and you never once spoke, but maybe I knew you were there all along because I never felt alone out on my branch in my tree. I went in loneliness, in the times I couldn't breathe, and then...and then I was alright.

Why did you wait so long?

***

When I first started blogging many years ago, it was mostly just because and mostly random and every which way. I'd start blogs on a whim, too. One of the blogs I started was called 'The Lockbox'. It housed a story I started. A story in second-person. Up till then I hadn't really shared my writing (for so many good reasons), but I did, and The Lockbox story ended up being one of the first pieces of writing I was...happy with. I felt there was something beautiful in it (it's debatable whether or not that was actually true). It's also my first grammatically half-correct piece of writing. Second-person story writing is...yeah...an undertaking, but back then I didn't realize it.

Nowadays with poetry, I do a lot of second-person writing, and there's a mystery to it I've grown to like. Anyway, this past week I did some free writing to escape the editing monster and all its dark henchmen, and I came up with this (though, it's been an idea floating around in my mind for awhile. I've wanted to write a children's story or something to highlight a friendship through letters since that's something I've experienced). Have you guys ever tried to write anything in second-person? What do you think of it?

Lastly, I did find out how I could access my old blogs. So I have a lot of lovely, totally not embarrassing, blog posts to share on my blogiversary post. Before this post comes into existence, do you have questions you'd like me to answer if I do a question and answer thing?

Favorite movies? Favorite books? Most inspiring individuals? Favorite food? Favorite album of all-time? First CD I ever got? Favorite childhood memory? Things that annoy me the most? What it's like to be the youngest (or did you guys even know that about me?)? I really don't know so, please, help. Shower me with questions in the comments!

Unexpected Admission to Guilt

Please go ahead and fix me,
If you think I'm fixable.
(Tall demand for human hands)
I just know I can't fix myself.
I can't sew these holes back up.
Can't find the soil
To fill the ditch.

Isn't it time yet?
Don't you think I've been broken long enough?
(Oh yes, you know I'm broken.
You're close and study all my flaws).
I don't think I can hide these scars,
These newest medals of my falls.
The secret will get out.*

*Surprise I'm only human
(Unexpected admission to guilt).
I breathe and bleed the same as you,
Just as shattered into two.
(But still, you might be better
So I'll check for sure
-Can you fix this brokenness?)

I'm not where I'm supposed to be.
I should be farther.
I should be perfect,
(Because everyone else is,
Because that's where perfection is)
Not just where eyes can see
But everywhere.

(And this glue doesn't work.
It doesn't do me any good.
Neither do the nails, the screws,
Everything I use)

Do you think I'm fixable?
(Or worth fixing,
Worth the time it takes
To put me back together)
Then go ahead and fix me.
Put hand and foot together.
(I am so desperate to feel
I don't care how other hands believe
I should be put together)

Here I am more broken.
Perfection
-Tall demand for human hands.

+++

I've been thinking a lot about the lies we end up believing (even when the voice of logic tries to poorly [if you're anything like me] counteract them). So many of the voices inside of our heads have just a bit of truth to what they say, just enough to make us stumble over them. Sometimes logic tells us that the pit we've fallen into is all our fault or that we're overreacting to circumstances or reading into other people's actions or lack of actions. It's our fault, and we should fix it.

I'm trying to learn to fight those thoughts, to recognize that our minds are battlefields (and so often, they are our primary battlefields). We belittle the thoughts and emotions as if they're just a result of a 'funky' mood, when they are the evidence of a battle erupting. It's so important that we tackle the unhealthy thoughts entering our mind before they make their home there. We have too much at stake to we give up our ground to them. It's the easiest battle to lose, and it's the most important to win.

My posting may be a bit irregular because another of my brothers is visiting, and it is enough to work, sleep, and peoplize.

Safest Place to Land

Maybe you're the safest place to land,
And maybe that's alright.
(Oh, but underneath
The fear shakes my firm belief)
Who are you, really?
- Just another disappointment,
Just another piece of floor
Pulled out from underneath my feet.
(I hope, I hope it isn't true
-That hope hasn't deceived me
Like it has before)
It's hard for me to trust,
To lay myself right open,
But I don't want any
Conditional love masked as something
That will actually last.

But you seem like a safe place to land,
The safest place I've seen in days.
Your lights are on,
Welcoming beacons for a weary traveler,
And my heart is weary
And worn.

I'd like to put down my bag,
And please, don't be impatient
If I linger at your door.
I'm testing all the boards
Just to see if something creaks.
You deserve the benefit of the doubt,
But be patient with my heart.
They've walked across it
A few times for good measure.
It's never been that strong,
And now it isn't even.

And I'm learning about forgiving
And healing and forgetting,
And you were there
When I sent out a desperate flare.
So, maybe, do you think-
(Don't be afraid to say no.
I'll take the truth
Better than all these bitter lies.
I'm tired of these bitter lies)
-You could be my place to land?

I didn't give you preparation
Or lay some good foundation
For a smooth, predicted landing,
But that doesn't even matter
Because I see you from way up high
As I plunge down in burning flames,
And you are here with all your lights turned on,
And maybe you're the safest place to land.

Stolen Joy

There. I've done it once again.
Let get beneath my skin.

And you steal away my joy.
I've let you in
To steal away my joy.
I've let you
Come too close and touch me
Where I'm broken most.
It ached
-This broken piece of me,
Only shattered more by a touch
That will never linger.

And now you know.
You have to know
Where lies my greatest flaw,
And so you sneak right in
To steal and destroy
My hope and my joy.
Hope and joy.

Why did I let you take them?
Why did I let you
Have this power over me?
No, you won't steal anymore
Than what I've let you steal.
You won't take away our memory.
Your face won't replace
The one I know and love.
You've changed,
But that doesn't mean she has
-- That girl,
The one inside my memory.
She wouldn't take my joy,
And so I take it back.

And I won't let you
Ever sneak beneath my skin.
I have room for a memory,
But there's no room for you.

Runaway

I think...
I think I'd like to runaway
And be a runaway
As long as it's with you.
Otherwise I wouldn't even
Last a single day.
Let's just leave our lives
And forget
About this aching pain.
Let's toss out all our troubles
And find some odd adventure
In forests and on mountain peaks.
I think...
I think it'd be enough-
You and me and God
And our conversations
And our own creations.
I don't think
Anything could make me come right back
To what my life was like before.
I don't think
I could bear this loneliness again
Or never seeing that face of yours
Or hearing what you have to say
To make the darkness lighten every day.
I think...
I think I'd stay a runaway
Because if I could just
Pack my bags and go,
I might outrun
My loneliness and
My disappointment
And find some place
That's quiet to stay
Until my mind is silent.
I think...
I think it'd only work
If you were there with me.

Hey guys, I didn't intend on taking a two week break from blogging, but my brother and his family came to visit (which meant I met my nephew for the very first time!! He's just the sweetest little guy <3), and everything fell by the wayside. I have some other types of posts in the works, but for now, as I catch back up, I thought I'd post more poetry.

I hope all of you are doing well! What's been happening in your lives?

Perspective

You were so broken,
And I wanted to fix you,
To piece back together
The parts that have left you,
To set your heart back to beating
The steady rhythm that I know,
But how could I fix you
When I'm as broken myself?
I don't know what it is to be whole,
But I've always imagined you were.
It must be my fault, then,
That I now see this new fracture .
I set you too high,
And now you have too far to fall.
No, you've already fallen
And shattered high flying theories of life
- my high flying theories of life,
But now that I know you are broken,
Will you let my hands touch your scars?
Will you let me close enough
-Close enough to put two pieces back together?
My hands don't know how to be gentle,
But I'll learn.
I won't use the same touch
As I cruelly use on myself.
I'll even approach on tiptoes
To keep from frightening your soul.
I see you reach out your hand
As I slip into your land.
"Come close. Don't be afraid."
I lift up my eyes at your voice
And wonder and stare and smile.
"You are broken - let me fix you."
I stand where I am
-Your words are my words,
Only said in reverse.
You see my brokenness,
And I see your fractures.
I don't know how to fix you,
But I hope you will fix me,
Or maybe we'll learn
-Learn to fix one another
Or maybe we'll learn
To live broken together.

Invisible Property Line

Invisible property line
-- Am I trespassing on yours
Or are you trespassing on mine?
If you just keep your distance,
I'm sure we'll be fine.
These lines are for our safety,
Or at least that's what I'll say
As I take my steps away.
We could be friends
Or maybe friendly neighbors,
But that would imply
A wave as I go by,
And I don't think that's what you think of
When you say that's what we'll be.
These laws are for a purpose
--To keep us contentedly in a box
Or a square or rectangle
Or whatever the lines are
That make up your staked property,
And I'm in this box contentedly
With no wish to make its corners curved,
But you are a little close for comfort,
Coming closer every day.
Don't you remember
There's this invisible property line,
And I'm sure you're invading mine.
Just take a step back,
And then I'll build a fence
Which we will conversate across.
We won't worry about lines
-- I won't worry about how close you are
Because we'll always have this wall
--This protection for my heart.
I guess I'll add 'hello'
To my daily wave,
And I guess we'll be friendly neighbors now,
Even though the fence will bock our faces
From having further conversations.

Even Miracles Leave Scars

Sometimes the best things happen. The miraculous things.  Events that show the evidence of God's tender mercies. Curtain closed because when prayers are answered and lives saved, when a mother gets a new heart and goes back to her children, that is the end of the story. There can't be anything more to add to all the unimaginable good.

But even miracles leave scars.

And I know about miracles, and I know about scars. And the world does close the curtain after miracles. And life does seem to continue on the outside. Why wouldn't it be any different from what you see? If the miracle hadn't happened, then it would be just another part of life and death. If a person was a survivor of a tragedy, there might be some lasting damage. Some cracks on the surface. Some scars. Some need of a bandage here and there, a little help for the healing.

But the good? The miracle stuff? There's no healing needed there. No band aid on a brokenness. Good doesn't equal bad. It can't be bad. We were given so much. Our cup was overflowed with blessings so why does it now seem empty? Why has the miraculous become the limping mundane?

A couple weeks ago you might have read my post celebrating 18 years since my mom's heart transplant. That's big, and it's something to make us exceedingly joyful. There is nothing that can negate from God's immense love and provision for us through that time and continuing to today. But it's not perfect. Nothing will be perfect this side of heaven, and on this side of heaven, miracles leave scars.

I've told you about the miracle, but the scars? It's harder to talk about them because you're left with evidence of a seemingly cruel kindness, and God is never cruel. But you wonder about God's love all the same. Why, God? Why is it this way? Why does a nine-year-old turn into a teenager with depression who turns into a young woman who struggles with the fear of a returning depression all her life? Why does a three-year-old who remembers people's faces and sadness but no other emotions turn into a teenager with lack of confidence issues because she isn't brave and she should be braver. What is wrong with her? But her parents don't need two squeaky wheels and it isn't her mom's fault but maybe all the time she's just had anxiety disorder? Why? Why do miracles hurt?

We got the heart, but what about the empty place at the table? What about the heart missing from someone else's life? Curtain closed. Don't look too closely or you'll see we're just threadbare in survival mode. 18 years and still in survival mode. Medications. Hospital stays. Emergency rooms. Fear. Wondering. Uncertainty.

Maybe these scars are here on our hearts so we might never forget it is by God's great love that we are not consumed. We can ask God to take them away. We can plead that He will, but sometimes His answer will be the same as the one He gave Paul - 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in your weakness'. We are crippled and so we cling. We are bruised so He can bind us up. Man of sorrows, what a name!

Spring and Hope

It was spring today.
I guess it's time to come alive,
To throw off the blankets
And greet the bluest sky.
The birds were hope,
Or they sang of a hope
We haven't seen for awhile.
Hope and darkness
Cannot easily coexist,
And I have been the darkness,
And who has been my hope?
But it was spring today,
And something stirred inside.
Something that changed
The colors of my day
And made me come alive.
From the death-like winter in my soul
To hope and spring holding hands.
In the moments from here
The flowers will grow,
And I will try to grow
After being stunted for a year.
But it doesn't seem impossible
Or improbable or simply not to be
Because spring is my season
To learn to live again.
I'm gasping in each breath,
Dancing beneath springtime skies,
Embracing that thing with many feathers
-That thing called hope.
It was spring today.
It's time to come alive.
I've been fast asleep
For months now,
And waking up is hard
Because hope and joy mean everything,
But they are quickest to die
When you don't fight to keep them alive.

Let Me Tell You a Story About Miracles

I wrote this up last year and posted it. Some of you have read it. Some of you haven't, but here it is again in all its flaws:

It began 18 years ago on a warm, July afternoon in a mobile home up a dirt road. There lived a family in that house. A family of seven. Three boys and two girls, all homeschooled, with their mother and father. The youngest was only three and a half, and I remember that the best out of all the children's ages; though the eldest must have been around fourteen or fifteen.

The time was shortly after a lunch - the food being a big pot of spaghetti. The mother had gone to lay down because she didn't feel well. The father was at work. The children were gathered in the living room as they watched Reading Rainbow. There was something funny, but when the children paused it for their mother to come and watch, the mother said she didn't feel well enough. Then she was leaving out the door with their grandma.

From that moment on, nothing made sense. It didn't make sense for nine long months, and even after that, I don't think it made sense until all the children were grown. And by that time, it was hard to comprehend the depths of what happened. Time numbed the urgency. Time numbed the sorrow. Time numbed the loneliness, but time didn't entirely take those feelings away. There was always something in the bottom of the children's hearts when they thought about that July afternoon 18 years ago.

18 years ago on a warm, July afternoon, a church was burning. Most of emergency personnel were downtown at the scene. When the mother called her brother-in-law who worked for the fire department to ask what she should do, he told her to drive to the hospital. It would take too long for an ambulance to get there. It would take too long...

Because the mother was having a heart attack. Not just a light one where you go the hospital. They give you medication. They help you, and then you get to go home to your family soon.

This was the kind where you almost die. Where your heart gives completely out and can't work on its own. Where machines keep you alive as you wait for a completely new heart - somebody else's heart.

This was the kind of heart attack where you almost die again and again. And again. And again. And again. And again. And again. This was the kind of heart attack where you spend nine months away from your family.

The mother was gone. The father was gone, to work and then to the hospital on the weekends.  For the children, it was somebody different or the somebody different but the same every day. People became adopted aunts and uncles and grandparents. It was meals brought by strangers and church family. It was every other weekend over the mountains to the big hospital in the big city where they ate bacon, cheeseburgers in the cafeteria and watched cartoons in the hospital waiting room. Sometimes they'd get brought popsicles. Sometimes they'd get to see their mother. Sometimes they'd get to hug her. Sometimes...

Sometimes they could only look through a window and wave and say 'I love you' in sign language.

But at night, back at home, after the father had sang hymns in the hallway till he hoped they were all asleep, the youngest would cry. She would cry herself to sleep, keeping her two older siblings who shared the same bedroom awake, because she missed her mother so much.

There were comings and goings. There were almosts and not quites. There were Christmas presents from the church. There were people who showed overflowing love. And praying. There was lots and lots and lots of praying. And there were miracles. Miracles like how the local hospital had just trained people to use the machine which saved the mother's life two weeks prior to that July afternoon.

And then there were sad miracles. In early March of 2000, a man who was studying to become a pastor was driving home with his fiancée from college. They were hit by a drunk driver. The fiancée was killed immediately, but the young man lived a couple days in the hospital before he died, but he had chosen to be an organ donor. His heart was the one which perfectly fit what the mother needed.

The heart was Jesus' heart already. And that was a bittersweet thing.

On March 7th, the mother was given a new heart. And every March 7th is a Birthday, of sorts. A celebration of another year of miracles.

I have a vague, 3 and a half year-old's memory of those nine months, but there are still things I remember quite clearly. And since last Wednesday was March 7th, I wanted to write something about it. I wanted to put into writing how broken everything can be without a mother. I wanted to remember how lucky I am to have had a mother these 18 more years because no matter how common transplants might become - they will always be a miracle.

We met the parents of the donor. All seven of us. They love Jesus, too.

Dear Anxious Heart

Dear Anxious Heart,

This isn't your fault.

Hold up, don't stop listening to me.

I know you. I know what you're thinking because I've been hearing all the things you've said to yourself for the past ten years. It's that verse in the Bible, isn't it? The one where you're supposed to hold every thought captive? You're beating yourself over the head because killing those pesky little thoughts is what you're supposed to be doing. You're not supposed to have a million worries tearing you to pieces day in and day out.

Oh, you know really well what you're supposed to be doing. You've rehearsed it: Don't worry. Have you looked at the birds lately? Do they worry? Does worrying change anything? What about the verse where perfect love casts out fear? Yeah, I'm guessing you must not have much love inside, right? Then there's the practical side: Anxiety kills sleep, kills joy, physically kills (you know anxiety can help cause severe medical problems? Mom wonders some days if anxiety was part of the cause of her heart attack, but let's not think about that. It makes us anxious). It kills hope. And friendship. And let's not start talking about your future.

I've heard your 'mature' side going to war against those anxious thoughts. Mature side? No, it isn't your mature side. I've heard its cutthroat threats. Its screams: You should know better than this. If you loved God, you'd just do what you need to do, what you're called to do. Get over yourself. You're so selfish and self-conscious. You're a people-pleaser. You are not capable of doing anything. You can't even go into Walmart without putting on army as if you're going to war. Good grief, it's just a store! You hide behind some sacrificial garb to avoid facing your life. Oh, and you don't have any self-confidence (is that really surprising?). You love yourself more than Jesus. You'd rather be safe and warm in your little ball of a comfort zone than follow Him. You're a coward.

Oh, Anxious Heart! You're not a coward. You are courageous, and you are a warrior. Even when alarms are screaming, and they all scream the same, you still get up in the morning, and you try. You give life a go. You're bloody and bruised, but you haven't succumbed to hopelessness. You haven't given up. You think anxiousness is a part of your heart, a flaw in your character, but it isn't! It isn't you, even as it tries to swallow you up and forces you to believe all these lies. You're just a child hidden away in a closet of a house with bolted doors and windows. There's a knock at the door, but in your dark closet you cannot see if it's an enemy who will trespass or a friend. All those resounding knocks carry through the house the same - as alarms. That is anxiety.

But Jesus doesn't despise you, heart that's a little anxious. He knows you, and He knows the battles you fight every day. He doesn't ever, ever, ever despise you.

And sometimes it's not even your fault - these anxious thoughts. These moments of rapid heartbeat where you can't hardly breath, and everything is too much, and something has to change. Sometimes the seeds of anxiety were planted long before you had the Holy Spirit inside to help you ward them off.

Oh, heart that's anxious, what an unfair world we live in where small, hardly memorable, 'let's just brush them off' moments have scarred. Moments when bigger hands and bigger arms were supposed to protect you because you didn't know how to protect yourself. Moments when 'you just have to grow a thicker skin' created a current of consequential actions you didn't even know were anything but an aspect of your personality.

Dear (for the moment) Anxious Heart, remember these things: You are not anxiety. Don't rip yourself apart because you know this is not the way God wants you to live and you think it's all your fault. Don't hold a pity party. These plants might have grown up when you were young, but you fight against them, and you must continue to fight. Your weaknesses don't have to separate you from God. Surrender to His mercy. He waits just beyond the wall of your own strength to reach out and grasp you. He will be your safety, the house where your closet is hidden (and He'll know just who's at the door).

Dear heart, if you see yourself as broken, it's just because we all are. Only our cracks are in different places.

It's a Lonely Place

I know it's a lonely place
-This place with its every day walls-
But I'm never really lonely
Until I try not to be lonely,
If that makes any sense at all.
I contort myself to fit the crowd,
And then I don't even like myself
-The version I am out there.
I can't breathe or simply be
When I believe that who I am is not enough.
So this is the place where I stay.
You call it my comfort zone.
I just know it's where I'm most me.
Can't that be enough?
I'll paint this place a warmer tone
Once my roots dig deep,
Once you're finally convinced
It's alright for me to stay,
Untouched by people out there
Whose circles I squarely fit.
So it's alright
If at first it's a little lonely
-This place with its worn, old walls -
I'll grow used to all its colors,
And then they'll soon be just me.

To Plant Some Hope

I want to plant a tree.
I want to plant some hope
So that everyone who looks might believe,
Even when inside I don't.
I want to patch these holes
-My holes -
With something better yet,
A patchwork more noble
Because of who I know.
I want to reflect more than myself
When others look inside my eyes.
They needn't see the holes I see
Or everyday compromise.
I want to make believe
Something is growing deep inside
-A quality you'd want to find,
Or some dying piece of self
Who gives more growth in death
Than ever does with life,
Or maybe just a seedling
Whose presence surprises
And whose purpose can't be discovered.
I don't want to wait,
But growing things takes patience
And maybe a little break
From the sun's strong face
Or from the drought which dries a soul.

I want to plant a tree.
I want to plant some hope,
And maybe both will start
In the garden of my heart.
